Slow sintering in garnet‐containing Y and Gd zirconate–aluminate mixtures for thermal barrier coatings

چکیده
Mixtures of rare-earth zirconates and aluminates containing Y or + Gd that form a two-phase garnet–fluorite mixture exhibit much slower sintering than pure fluorite at 1400°C. An equivalent Y-free, Gd-containing composition forms perovskite aluminate instead garnet showed faster densification after the metastable decomposes. At 1500°C, Y-free sample also fastest initial rate, whereas there was more divergence in rate for samples Gd. The zirconate–aluminate with equimolar shows slowest 1500°C retains ∼25% porosity 250 h. results highlight possibilities designing compliant thermal barrier coatings can retain significant 1400°C higher.

Thermal Barrier Ceramic Coatings — A Review
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) provide effective thermal barrier to the components of gas turbine engines by allowing higher operating temperatures and reduced cool‐ ing requirements. Plasma spraying, electron-beam physical vapor deposition, and sol‐ ution precursor plasma spray techniques are generally used to apply the TBCs on the metallic substrates. The present article addresses the TBCs f...
متن کاملMicrostructural investigations of EBPVD thermal barrier coatings
This paper deals with the morphology, constitutive phases and fine microstructures of some EBPVD processed yttria partially stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings. This study has been performed by X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the coatings studied were constituted of a single metastable tetragonal t' phase, as expected if one refers...
متن کاملThermophysical properties of thermal barrier coatings
Thin layers of thermal barrier coating (TBCs) are applied to metallic components of heat engines to reduce metal temperatures and to provide environmental protection. This results in increased engine efficiency and prolonged operational life. Of special current interest is the use of TBCs in aircraft engines. The TBCs, often yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), are deposited on nickel or cobalt-ba...
متن کاملDelamination of multilayer thermal barrier coatings
Multilayer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) on superalloy substrates are comprised of an intermetallic bond coat, a thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer, and a porous zirconia top coat that provides thermal protection. The TGO attains a thickness of 1±10 lm prior to failure, while the bond coat and zirconia layer are each about 50±100 lm thick. The preferred method for manufacturing TBCs comprises ...
متن کاملMicrowave Drilling of Ceramic Thermal-Barrier Coatings
The microwave drill is a novel process for creating shaped holes in nonconductive materials. Its inherent material selectivity makes the microwave drill ideally suited for the controlled removal of ceramic coatings from underlying metallic substrates. In this paper, it is shown that the microwave drill process can drill through ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to uncover an array of simu...
